life for me is pretty easy i must admit. i live w/ my aunt and uncle in exchange for various odd jobs around the house. i have enough money to get out and do something once a week, so I fish, or go downtown and check out musical venues. I go to the gym a lot, too. but everything sucks. I have no passions. i have skills, but no passions. ppl tell me i could be a cartoonist with my drawing skills, I play guitar and sing quite a bit for 10 years, I’m somewhat of an experienced carpenter, i have an above average iq, and i learn things very quickly. But nothing matters to me.

nobody can make me laugh, except my own brother, nothing gets me excited beyond the point of saying "oh, that’s cool". day to day my most common thoughts are about how life is meaningless, and how i need to get laid but it aint gonna happen because im such a downer.

my only dream is to get myself off the grid and completely cut myself off from civilization, but apart from that i don’t strive for anything… and to be honest, i’m too damn lazy to do anything about that one goal, anyways.

i have no understanding of emotions, the only thing i feel is hopelessness. women don’t appreciate that, and i can only think of one thing that will help to pick me up… women. i want to start dating, but i don’t know anybody in this town. i started on some online dating site, and i am somewhat shallow, just so you know, but the only girls that get matched to my profile are the greasy mustard-tiger types, and i just can’t figure out how i’d find the hole… j/k. seriously though it’s not working out. So I managed to successfully exchange emails with this girl I want to be friends with. I followed the advice of saying "maybe we could talk sometime" in my other question. I think that exchange went really well… certainly better than I was expecting.

Is physics really that hard in university and grad school?? what makes it so difficult?
I’m a sophmore in high school and even though right now we are learning chemistry and algebra 2 i’ve begun homeschooling myself on physics and calc, now heres the problem; i love physics and i’m good at it, aced all the quizzes in my books. BUT im not as good as math, like i can do math and i sure as hell like it but im, err, slow. like i need a calc to do my homework all the time even though i know what im doin.

Wow, you’re awesomely perfect for physics! Yes, many people say that it’s super hard, and some of the upper level stuff is difficult (the more interesting, the more difficult the math), but the majority of people who say it’s hard are the ones who dropped out of the class before they gave it a chance or the people who hear comments from those who dropped. People are also intimidated by equations because of the greek letters, but they are just symbols. People seem to be afraid of them because they aren’t in the english alphabet. They’re fine with x and y, but theta is scary lol.

I know that you’re the ideal student for physics because I’m a current physics education major (I want to teach physics at high schools). You actually have better qualifications than I did. I had all A’s, loved science, IQ of 110, and am very interested at times but my interest can drift. But the fact that you’re teaching it to yourself is wonderful and rare, but it will be endlessly helpful to you in college. Don’t stop that habit, always try learning more and studying a lot, because that’s what college is all about.

Don’t worry about being slow at math, I am too. Just try not to make mistakes. My physics prof gives us unlimited time to take our exams in case we have some sort of test anxiety or something.

I know you’re only a sophomore, but you should start looking at colleges with good physics programs. Find a university close by (for now at least) and contact the chair of the physics department, tell him you’re interested, and ask tons of questions (maybe make an appointment with him). He can help you learn physics, tell you about possible career paths, programs with that college, extra cool details about physics that books never mention, and serve you as a link to physics programs you can begin while you’re in high school (like perimeter, quarknet, or physics & arts summer institute). These programs will make you stand out unbelievably in contrast to your peers. In high school though, you should take as many physics and math courses as you can, it looks great and keeps you in practice. Try to challenge the APs too if your school offers them. Also, you’d make the physics professor (whom you’re asking questions to) very excited that a sophomore in high school is this interested and so if he works at the college you want to go to, you’re basically already accepted!

In addition, you’ll probably have some crappy physics teachers in the future, but don’t let them fool you! Physics isn’t as bad as they make it seem, which you seem to already know.

Good luck on your future endeavors. I’m sure you’ll become a great physicist or professor!

Please read this before answering. I’m a 16-year-old, and I definately believe that I have depression. I always feel stressed when there isn’t anything to stress about, I keep forgetting every little thing, I just want to sleep all the time and don’t feel rested when I wake up, I can’t seem to feel happy other than laughing when something funny happens, I’m easily irritated when other people try to talk to me or call me, and I don’t enjoy doing anything any more (even hanging out with my friends who I love dearly). I feel like my life is really empty right now because I have an impossible time trying to focus on even school work or my writing, and I have no inspiration to do anything AT ALL. I also have a hard time thinking anything good about myself, which I used to be able to do. I often have random crying spells too. However, I AM NOT suicidal and do not want to be directed to an emergency hot line or anything like that. Suicide is something I never, ever see myself doing. I am also homeschooled, so please don’t direct me to a school counselor, which I have seen many people say to questions like these. I have taken online quizzes (which are not always accurate, I know), and they all say that I have moderate to severe depression and beg me to get help.

I’ve talked to both my parents, but my Dad says that:

1. It may be caused by lack of exercise (I’m not overweight- actually very skinny, but I barely get exercise in) since he knew that even he was much happier when he was more active. Even if this is the problem, no one in my family does anything to help me exercise or get fresh air when I ask/plead for it. My Mom makes excuses not to take me to the gym or pool, my Dad is always working, and I’m not allowed to go out by myself. I can not drive yet.

2. He says that what I’m feeling also sounds like what a lot of extremely gifted artistic types go through. I do love writing/sketching, but this answer I am absolutely not satisfied with. My IQ is 127, but I’ve never found myself able to do anything special that someone else around me couldn’t do much better. This may just be the depression talking, but it’s the way I feel.

My Mom never gives me much of a response, and although she tries to seem genuine, she doesn’t appear to take it very seriously. My Mom isn’t adamant about it, but by the way she complains about her life and always finds a way to ignore the meaning of what I’m really talking about and start talking about what she’s doing, it’s not hard to tell that she’s a bit narcistic.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not some brooding teenager who hates my life and my parents. I know I have a good life, but I just can’t enjoy it at all. I love my parents dearly also, but they don’t seem to be listening.

Please tell me what I should do. I feel utterly trapped, and I don’t know what else to do. I don’t need a pep talk (those never work any more, unfortunately), I just need to be guided. Please.

Also- I’m not sure if this even affects anything, but-
–I don’t do drugs.
–I don’t use alcohol.
–I am not, nor have I ever been, sexually active.
I don’t eat a lot of sugar. I probably eat the most vegetables and fruit out of anyone else in my family.
Yes, I am a Christian for those wondering, and I do need to trust God more. When I trust Him, it always relaxes me.

Sometimes people dont understand what you are going thru. Me i have had these problems. Me mine comes from my past I was raped as a child by a family member, homeless when my mom got on drugs, beat by my mate. But I had to give my troubles to God. I dont kno how religious you are. I’m not a saint but I do Honor my Lord. Parents are not the best people to talk to sometimes, Talk to a close friend. Sometimes it is easier to talk to strangers because they dont know you personally so they cant judge you or alter their opinions to fit what they think you should hear. I think the best thing you have done so far was write your feelings on here. I’m not a counselor but take time and do some fun things, do some new things. Get out and socialize. My little boy is irritated very easily he like people to leave him alone. Sometimes you would think he have the weight od the world on his shoulders and its at those times I realize he needs my attention. I try and let him do stuff to get his mind off things, Sometimes we wrestle or just get out the house and play and after that he is back to normal. Also tell your parents how you feel tell them you dont feel like are listening. Tell them to hear your cry. Hope this helps
